Daiso Cosmetics Review: Korea’s Cheapest K-Beauty That Actually Works

Daiso Cosmetics: Korea’s Cheapest K-Beauty Secret I Didn’t Expect

When I think of Daiso, I picture socks, plastic baskets, or lint rollers that mysteriously run out too fast—skincare, never. Then “Daiso beauty” started trending, and I tried a lip tint “just for fun.” It was… good. Soon, Korean bloggers, YouTubers, even some dermatologists were recommending Daiso finds. I started paying attention.

What Is Daiso, Really?

Think dollar store meets Muji—plus skincare shelves.

Outside Korea, Daiso feels like a cross between a dollar store and Muji. Prices usually sit under ₩5,000 (~$3–$4). In the last few years, tucked between kitchen sponges and notebooks, something unexpected appeared: active-ingredient skincare.

Why Daiso Skincare Is Cheap (and Works)

Plain tubes and jars of Korean skincare on a shelf—minimal packaging
Plain packaging keeps costs low; formulas do the work.

Luxury brands pay for frosted glass, magnetic lids, and double boxes. Daiso uses light tubes and simple cartons. You’re paying for the formula, not the jar. Many products are made by the same contract manufacturers that supply bigger cosmetic houses.

The Star: Retinol Cream

The viral Retinol 2500 IU Wrinkle Shot Perfector.

The one everyone talks about is the Retinol 2500 IU Wrinkle Shot Perfector—so popular it’s often sold out. Usually I treat retinol like liquid gold; with this price, I use it on face, neck, and hands. My personal daily pick, though, is the gentler Boncept Retinol 500 IU Cream—great for sensitive skin or beginners.

Verdict: ★★★★☆ — 2500 IU is the star; 500 IU fits my routine best.

Big Brands Show Up at Daiso

When conglomerates like Amorepacific launch at Daiso, notice.

Example: Mimo by Mamonde Peony-tinol Trouble Balm (₩5,000). It blends retinol (oil control), chamomile water (soothing), and BHA (gentle exfoliation). Big names courting budget buyers = this isn’t a gimmick.

Everyday Glow Picks

Everyday glow picks you’ll actually finish.
  • The Lab by Blanc Doux Clear Hyal Dewy Cream (₩5,000) — cooling, quick-absorbing, great under makeup for a “glass skin” base.
  • Lip tints & sheet masks (₩2,000) — handbag-friendly, pigmented, zero guilt if lost.

My Honest Thoughts

Will Daiso replace Olive Young for my long-term barrier staples? Probably not. But it’s where I find unexpected gems—the ₩3,000 cream I finally use enough of, or the lip tint that becomes my everyday shade. K-Beauty can be luxury serums in frosted jars, and it can be a cheap Daiso tube that sparks joy. Both have a place.

My go-tos: Gangnam Express Bus Terminal Daiso (huge!) and Suwon Starfield Daiso (massive variety)—both dangerously fun.
